…And Let the Games Begin: Scalia is gone and Washington is doing Its ritual dance

Well, Justice Antonin Scalia is dead of a heart attack and the President is in another prime position to forge the country further into political progressiveness by appointing a suitable replacement for the former, conservative, Reagan-era appointee.  As usual, the Republicans are openly agitated about the idea of Obama making a strategic replacement that could tilt the political stance of the court and weigh heavily on the decisions that are awaiting a final judgement by its surviving members.

Yahoo reports that Scalia had heard and may have already cast votes in several high-profile cases like the ones concerning immigration, whether universities can continue to use affirmative action and if unions can collect fees from nonmembers to survive…just to name a few. Republican contenders like Donald Trump are calling for delays and Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, is preparing to obstruct Obama’s court appointment in any way possible.  The Huffington Post reports that McConnell, in 1988, voted to confirm a Supreme Court nominee when it was Ronald Reagan’s final year in office (Huffingtonpost.com, 2/13/2016).  They also stated that McConnell is calling for intervention in the court appointment process by the American people by stating that people should have a voice in the process with a possible Republican win in November.

Well, Mitch, you can only delay for so long…so what else is on tap?  A lawsuit, perhaps?

It’s no secret that this government has been known, on occasion, to invalidate its own laws in order to institute strange, unwritten policies designed to suit the status quo. One can clearly observe that this tactic of  political obstruction and delay has been used excessively during the Obama presidency by his political opponents.

Speaking of lawsuits, remember the one where House Speaker, John Boehner, wanted to bring a law suit against the President for enacting an Executive Order to get important transportation legislation passed, among other things, to get Americans working again and move the Country forward economically? -(CNN.com, 7/31/2014)

Why impede progress and seek to punish those who mean to do good?

The Republicans openly and unapologetically engage in and advocate political illegalities and irregularities.  This may seem like a minor issue, but based upon the Republican track record, it may be an indicator of thing to come if they take back the White House in the next term.  Supreme court appointments are chosen by the sitting President and then confirmed or denied by the Senate. End of discussion…right?

So what delay are the Republicans proposing and how are they going to pull this one off…what about the Constitution, fellahs?

“Senator Warren said in a statement, “Senator McConnell is right that the American people should have a voice in the selection of the next Supreme Court justice. In fact, they did – when President Obama won the 2012 election by five million votes.”–(Politicususa.com, 2/14/2016)

While there are some who still believe in common-sense politics and harbor a sense of political wisdom and understanding, I will never cease to be amazed at the gall of many of our politicians to openly advocate possible illegality in order to maintain power in Washington, D.C…even to the point of openly whining about it.  A lame-duck Presidency?  Absolutely not in the cards for Obama, however, more sleepless nights of plotting for nervous Republicans like Mitch McConnell…

you can put MONEY on it!

Too harsh? What’s your two cents?
